TOPIC: 1968 Johnson 40 HP

I have a co-worker that has a 1968 Johnson 40 HP on an old Renkin runabout. I'm not sure of the model number yet. All I know for sure is it has sat idle a VERY long time. The engine is not locked up, but all the wires are dry rotted.

Any thoughts on the value of the engine and remote controls?


I thought it might be something to restore on down the road.

Around San Antonio, Austin & Dallas/Ft Worth, the price can be 10 bucks or 300.oo if it's NICE.
(What I like about the old BigTwins is CHEAP to buy, SIMPLE, CHEAP to fix, OVER-engineered and LONG-lived with minimal care.)

a little more info on this engine.. its manual shift, electric start.

Old motors are " valuable " to those who can do the repairs in the backyard.

If you have to run to a shop to have work done on these then the cost can skyrocket at $100+ / hr.

There are places where motors like that are free for the taking as few shops will work on them anymore.

Thanks for the reply Professor. I would definitely perform 100% of the work myself. I can't remember the last time I paid anyone to repair or fix anything for me...

We can consider this thread a dead issue. The guy wants $175 for the engine. That's too much for me considering the shape it currently is in. Thanks for the replies everyone.
