TOPIC: Had a short at the lake

Last weekend I had a short in the white wire going from the starter relay to what appears to be a safety switch on the mag plate. I replaced the relay and wired like it was and the same wire got hot when cranking engine. So I disconnected it from both terminals and the engine starts an runs fine. Do I really need this part of the circuit?

That's a 1963 40HP - I think I remember that that is an auxiliary safety circuit but I've forgotten for what.

The micro switch on the magplate is there to prevent cranking with throttle too far advanced.
If wire gets hot there may be too much current in the circuit.
Look for a bare wire or possibly a defective solenoid.

Thx all. Professor; brand new solenoid, and rewired. Still same problem. Runs fine without. Guess I'll watch throttle setting when starting.

Are you sure the starter relay is the correct one and is wired correctly? Many of the engines use a relay that has 4 posts - the 2 large ones on the side for high current, and TWO small posts on the front that provide voltage to the relay coil. When the the key is turned to the start position, 12 volts is sent to one of the small posts on the relay. The other post has a wire that goes to the engine safety switch and then to the engine ground. Check to fee if the engine diagram matches how it's wired. You may also check to be sure that the engine has all of it's ground straps that run form the block to the base pan and mounting brackets.
