TOPIC: 1960 Johnson 40 HP is running ! timing still off

She is running very good. I reset the jets to your suggestions and got it started, however I think the real culprit was the mercury switches. They were not going into the right position so not allowing her to fire. I believe the timing is off because it will not idle at slow speed. I set the points at TDC on the crank shaft cam, and at that point I was unaware of the timing marks on the mag plate. Ah, the trouble with a non-machanic trying to do a project like this. I will bring it back into the garage and pull the flywheel and start over.

Use a timing light and see if the coils fire when mark on the flywheel is between the 2 vertical lines on the magplate.

Note it does not wander , it always fires between those 2 vertical lines.

I will do as you suggest when I can; I have to beg and borrow for tools, and help from the many mechanics in the family. Everything else is working good. She starts quickly, using the electric start that I have worked all the bugaboos out of.
