TOPIC: 1957 BUCCANEER STANDARD Model 12S13B

1957 BUCCANEER STANDARD Model 12S13B 11 years 2 months ago #80857

Friends,

I'm in the process of buying a STANDARD model (with on-board 2 gallon gas tank) 12S13B GALE BUCCANEER OB in "good running condition" (to power my "new to me" '57 Lone Star open fisherman) and would like to know what the equivalent EVINRUDE or JOHNSON that it is, so that I can order the water-pump impeller.
(I cannot find my GALE "interchange" book.)

ALSO, does anyone have an OWNER'S MANUAL that they want to sell?

yours, satx

We are one of the newest AOMCI chapter "Tejas".
Look under links for the Gale service manual. We are still building the web site

To All,

The "S" in the model number means "standard" (rather than Deluxe). Does anyone know what the "B" means?

No idea what the B means but to answer your first question the 12hp powerhead is identical to the 15hp Evinrude from 1955, I think the bore and stroke is the same just a few differences in carb etc anything having to do with ignition fuel or cooling systems are exactly the same parts.

Buccaneer!!

A means Royal Atlas
D means Fedway Saber
E means Elto (the Canadian equivalent of Buccaneer)
G may have been used for Goodrich Sea Flyer
H may have been used for Gambles Hiawatha
M may have been used for AMC Saber
S may have been used for Spiegel Brooklure
V means Eaton Viking (Canada)
W means Montgomery Wards Sea King

Gale also made "Western Flyer" for Western Auto before WW II, and used the suffix "W" on numbered models. After the war Western Auto switched to using the "Wizard" name, with engines made (in turn) by Kiekhaefer (Mercury), Oliver, Scott/McCulloch, and Chrysler.

I think the 1948-1953 Gale 12HP, the 1949 Elto Speedster and the 1950-1955 14HP Fastwins all used the same (19.94ci "wedge") block (with variations in bearings, carbs, manifolds).

In 1954 Gale started using a 17.89ci block for 12HP models (starting with 12D11 and 12S12), and the same year the 15HP "Super Fastwin" may have switched to a new 2pc block/crankcase.

The 15HP reappeared as the Gale 15HP in 1960 (and lived on after the end of Gale as (Canadian Made?) WorkTwin/WorkHorse models until the late 60's) after the Fastwin/FD shifted to the 18HP 22ci block.

At least that's what I've pieced together. But I've never worked on ANY of them!

The 1951-1963 Gale Products Service Manual should be useful:

silver-bay,

THANKS. - And here I thought that I was the sole "Gale Products NUT" on this site.
(Gale/Brooklure/SeaKing/SeaBee/etc are just as good of an OB as the other BigTwins & generally MUCH cheaper to buy.)

FWIW, I'm buying the 12S13B because it was recently over-hauled by a HS shop teacher, CHEAP and plenty powerful enough to push the 1957 Lone Star open fisherman.
Further, I'm buying it because I've never even SEEN a post 1953 "standard model" Gale Buccaneer, with "on-board gas tank".

I became interested because of "the one that got away" -- my mother cleaned house and I passed on a late 40's Sea Bee (a 3hp??) my father and brother had tinkered with, and a year later I got an old boat, and got started fiddling with old outboards (Max W's articles convinced me even a software guy had a hope of working on OMCs)! I had never known about Gale, and there is less information available about them, which made them ALL the more interesting! I haven't picked up any ..... yet!

silver-bay,

As this site's resident "cheapskate", I like CHEAP outboards, that still run fine. - Also, I once met "Max W" at a boat show & am one of his many "cheapskate" fans.
(I consider Jack Benny to be a spendthrift.)

I've never understood WHY anybody would want to pay THOUSANDS of dollars for a NEW OB, when most anybody, who has any mechanical ability whatsoever, can "re-muddle" an old OMC that they will likely NEVER wear out from use.
(Otoh, I literally wore out the cover of my first copy of his book & bought myself a 2nd copy.)

Tex
Not by a LOOOONG shot. I have between 8 to 12 Gales and Seakings. Throw in the other brand names they made and I think I will be nearer to 20

TallTexan,

GOOD to know. - I of course knew that you had NUMEROUS sorts of OMC outboards but I never knew that you were "overly fond of" Gale products in specific.

BTW, do you happen to have the "mixing formula" for Gale 1957 GREEN & WHITE?
(One of our Alamo College "paint & body shops" will paint the OB, IF the proper color formula can be found. - For "liability reasons" the college programs can only use their own materials.)

No I do not mix paint at all.
Do they have a color matching Comp?
If so buy one can of each color and paint a test spot on a sheet of metal and let them match it
