TOPIC: 1971 Johnson 50HP

1971 Johnson 50HP 11 years 3 months ago #78630

I just acquired a 1971 Johnson 50HP and I want to find out if it is supposed to have an outlet for the coolant water to shoot out, as an indication the the cooling system is working.
Do these motors charge the battery as they are running?

Thanks.

It does not have a belt driven generator !---It has a simple charging system under the flywheel with a rectifier mounted to the block..
It does not have a waterpump " tell tale " from the factory.
If you maintain (as in replace ) the impeller on a regular basis then the tell tale is not needed.I believe it has an overheat warning light on the box.----You might want to install a buzzer instead as that is a better warning method.

Thank you professor. That's good to know.
I plan on replacing the impeller before the first test run.

No voltage regulator either, a voltmeter hooked to the battery when running will tell you if it's charging or not. At idle you should show an increase to at least 13V, higher RPM will run it up as high as 16V! No worries about the high voltage as long as you don't run AGM or "Optima" style batteries. (They don't last long with the higher voltage, best to run regular "old style" lead-acid type.)
