Well..(as retired Machinist), ya gotta remember in 50 years, who know how many times the plugs were yanked, and put back in old or new. Every time done, you stress the aluminum, so over time its a snug'em up and hope. If it were mine, and a keeper..(what old J-Rude aint!)..I'd yank the head/s, helicoil all holes. Check the bores, new gaskets, and button it up and be like new.

Yep, as years doing it you simple get the "feel" for it. Also, I have never "put a torque wrench" to a plug in the 62 years of my life. Nothing can beat the human touch of "feel".

Plus putting in a used plug, with a already crushed gasket ring, feels different than a new one.

Well, the original question resulted when I first removed the plugs in the fall after purchasing the boat and motor. When I did, plug, heli-coil and all backed out. So, I purchased a new/used head, which I could finger tighten new plugs very smoothly, installed the head, and thought that I would ask the question since I am used to working on land engines with cast iron blocks instead of aluminum outboard heads, ..... if you know what I mean. I just did not want to go down that same path again, and end up with what the previous owner left me. Thanks for all the help.

Don't try this at home, but... many years ago, (maybe mid 1990's). I had reserved a campsite at Kinzua reservior for a holiday weekend. Friday afternoon, upon carefully changing the plugs in my mid 60's Sport-4 60hp Evinrude, yep, the last one spun... well, it was either dead in the water for the weekend, or, I took some 'J-B Weld' metallic epoxy, (yeah, I did) and 'glued' the plug in, and let set overnight. It worked! I not only got the weekend out of it, but I left it like that for the entire season. I then pulled the heads and took them to the machine shop for new threads...

This is a pic of the front part, has both a pull and electric start. Don't know if that helps. And how can you tell its a 57 as opposed to a 58? And does anyone know where I can get a cheap manual for it? The only one I found is 50 dollars, and another 40 for a parts catalog, though I'm not sure if I'd need that.
