TOPIC: Golder Meteor cooling

I want to test my 100hp Johnson golden meteor. Right now it's on a stand, put on a new starter solenoid, water impeller and just changed the lower unit elec shift lube, $10. a qt at the local dealer. Where or how can I hook up a garden hose to this puppy? I have muffs but this isn't the normal water inlet.

I have a fitting that goes on the water pickup that looks like a taco with a hose fitting. It came with the motor so I don't know if it is available from a dealer or was custom made. I am still working on my starter so I haven't been able to fire mine up or even attempt it yet.

So if make up a fitting to fit over the intake portion somehow it should work? Does that "taco" cover the whole underside thingy or just fit over the down part?

I tried as best I can to show how mine goes on. I can take a picture of it tonight. Hope it makes sense.

Tamahawk, thanks. I wasn't quite sure where the intake was. I think I can "field engineer" a piece to fit that little portion.

a really big garbage can works, just make sure that the impeller housing is submerged

I would use a large Rubbermaid garbage can. The water preasure from muffs via a preasurized garden hose can mimic water pressure produced by the water pump. You don't really know if the waterpump is producing the cooling water. With the garbage can if the motor cools you know it's because of a properly circulating water pump. Also, don't forget these motors have thermostats. Once up to operating temp the high outlet for exhaust should put out exhaust and water spray about 170 degrees fairenheight. Use a cooking thermometer and insert into exit port.

I see the small cover on the side of the lower unit.----I thought that was removed for proper cooling in a test tank ?---I will look at one of these lower units later today to see where that port leads to.

That is a really big lower unit but I think I have a "stretchable" garbage can that will work. Seems like a really small inlet area for the cooling, what about opening the side port like mentioned?

Plastic 55 gal barrels work great, just cut off the top 1/3 or so. They can often be had pretty cheap, and if you want to get fancy you can put a drain valve (like in a coleman cooler!) in the bottom for a couple bucks more. Just a thought.......

Just drill and tap for a 1/2 bolt...works fine!

I used a heavy rubbermaid garbage can and drilled a whole about 3/4" up from the bottom and used 3/4" pvc pipe ball valve from Lowes, used a cork gasket between the inside nut and garbage can.
