TOPIC: What the Mercury guys don't want you to know!

What the Mercury guys don't want you to know! 11 years 8 months ago #72996

Grab the beverage of your choice and sit down. Watch this vintage film and witness jaw dropping power and performance from OMC. Take note of the inlines being schooled - over and over again. No - this isn't some urban legend passed on through generations of Merc owners. This is historic PROOF of who had the real power!

Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed the video. Makes me wonder where all those boats are now.

I was a diehard Mercury man since 1961 with Mercury motors of 22, 50, 80, and two 115 HP's. They were all excellent motors. I had a chance to buy a mint 1987 Glastron/Carlson CVX-16 this spring with a 1985 115 HP Johnson motor. I thought, I'm buying the boat, but will switch out the motor for a spare 1988 115 Merc I had. But the Johnson has exceeded my expectations. Beautiful in appearance, quiet, easy to work on, and I bet just as powerful or more than the 1988 Merc I could put on it. Getting 55.0 MPH GPS with a 22" Raker prop.

Yeah well, cut me and I still bleed Mercury black. Funny that Big Black is still top 'o the heap in racing today however, hmmmm? And OMC? Not so much. As they say "Speed kills, buy a Johnnyrude!"

I like them both.
I've personally owned more Mercs than OMC.
Both have put a smile on my face.
The inline six is a nice simple package, I especially like the ADI 90 or 115.
RIght now I have an evil 1999 Evinrude 115 Ficht direct injected.
It is quiet, powerful, sips fuel.
I also have a couple of inlines, ADI 115's.

After owning both, I do like the lower profile of the V4 better, and they are quieter. But, like dpanky says, if either an inline or V4 is on the transom in good running condition I'm not swapping it out.

Just as a side note for any that don't know it - I post stuff like this for the enjoyment of all. Like Bill, I'm an "equal opportunity" engine operator. However, I find that Mercury diehards usually become more agitated when someone dares to defame their brand. They are like sitting ducks for antagonists like me. I just can't help myself - It's too much fun to stir the sh*t pot once in a while. I actually think the hobby would be boring if it weren't for the spirited rivalry between brand loyalists.

Smile -

Me too!!! I live in an area where our local chapter of the AOMC think that the Johhnyrudes are king of the heap and that is mostly what I see when I show up at the meets. I collect and restore Mercs, but I love all of them, especially the orphan makes like Scott and Martin. But the real fun is the jibs and jibes between us when we get together. They say my Mercs are afraid of the water, etc and I rib them over as well, and we have a ball doing it. Keep it all in good humor, and don't stop. It is all part of the hobby!!! Check out this link if you have not already seen it, great write up! Cheers.

I've owned more Elgins than any other brand. But I have run them all. If it is an outboard I love it!

Holy crap, a Homelite 55! Boston Whalers were used with these engines back in the day, a fascinating engine and one that I hope to put in my collection at some point. Way ahead of their time!

I have a homelite just like the one in the picture plus I put a Bear Cat on my buddys boat a G3.
I have trolled for 5 hours with mine and only use 2 1/2 of gas Now you can't beat that for a 55 hp motor.

Heres a pic of my buddys boat a G3 just as he hit the gas
