TOPIC: shear pins

shear pins 11 years 10 months ago #71543

Does anyone have a chart for the different sizes for different motors. Most of my motors are OMC 5.5 horse to 40 horse and 1954 to 1963. Thank you DC

Years ago I used to just get a 1/4" brass curtain rod from a hardware store and cut it to the length of the pin. Those fit my 57 through 68 35 and 40 hp rudes. Do not use steel rod, it defeats the purpose of the shear pin which saves your lower unit if you hit a rock or something.

The other reason not to use steel is it will rust into position never to be removed.

If you ever do shear one, and you don't have a backup, you can shove the part that is still in the drive shaft off center enough to get you to shore. My dad taught me that.

But yes, use aluminum or brass. I think they are 1/4 inch diameter.

Thank you but do you know what number goes to what motor? I know they come in different sizes like 14 and 16 for the pre made ones. DC

I had 8- 1/4" X 1 1/8" Brass shear pins sent to me that were supposed to be SS. I have no use for them, if someone can use them I'll mail them to you. Daniel

Thank you all very much. I looked but couldn't find a chart that and now I may just go out and buy two different brass rods and give it a try. I didn't realize there were so many different sizes until I had to look into it. Thanks again and be safe

Yes If you want send me your email address and I will send them as an attachment. I have the other page of the Cosom chart somewhere on photobucket however I could not find it (photobucket changed a lot of things and I am still learning the new format). I do know where it is in my files

Message sent, and Thank You!

I'm not a fan of the new PhotoBucket format either, I kept the old version as long as they would let me. I had a heck of a time finding my albums too, think I finally clicked on my name to get there? (To the main one, then the sub-albums showed on the right like they used to.) Very cumbersome! :(

edit.....and files rec'd. Thanks again TT.
