TOPIC: Control Cables Too Long

Control Cables Too Long 12 years 1 month ago #66544

Johnson control cables are about 5 feet too long for the boat. How do you shorten them? Yah, I know..."cut 'em off". What's the right way to do it? Engine-side or control side?

Thanks,
John

New cables are cheap on Amazon.com
just bought 2 10 footers for 47.00 shipped
teleflex 400 series

if you cut them off on an OMC application you will lose the mounting points at the engine OR controller

What most people do is loop them in the back of the boat. The brass ends are crimped on So if you cut them you can't adjust them any more. Make about 2 foot loops

Get new cables. They're cheap. Trying to cobble something together could result in, at minimum, embarrassment and at maximum, damage to life & limb. Save the old ones for the next project...

Thanks, guys, but I'm still having no luck finding cables for the older motor. This is a '58 Super Sea Horse 36hp. Amazon has newer stuff. Maybe I'm just not searching properly?

teleflex 400 fits johnson/evinrude/OMC pre 1979
you reuse your old ends at the engine or if you don't have them there are adapter kits also
but they are kinda expensive
CABLES ARE BY LENGTH
PN# cc17010 10ft
pn# cc17011 11ft
pn# cc17012 12ft
etc.....

Thank you! Did not realize the connector ends are not included with the new cables, and that they are removable. So much to learn!

Are you guys saying I could get new cables for my 73' Evinrude 65HP?
I will be in need soon, I though they were obsolete.

call Teleflex
I think they are just pre or post 1979 for the application
