TOPIC: Short Shaft V-4

Anyone know where I can get a 69 or newer V-4 shorty? I know they aren't that common or maybe non existent. I'd like one for my old Allison. If not, any tricks to machine them a little shorter?

As an experiment, I had my welder shorten a 1980's 35hp. It cost about $250. It can be done. I have a 55HP 1979, shorty but I'll bet the V4s are extremely rare.

I'm fairly sure that the only S-S V4 engines built since 1969 were racing engines. Even those were built in very limited numbers and apparently only sold to acrual racing teams. They were not for sale to the general public. The driveshaft and exhaust tower are only part of the problem - the swivel shaft & transom clamp housing were different too. The racing engine lower units were vastly different too.

John Tiger made a nice mid for his Allison 13 speedster. I'm not finding any pics of it, but it was nicely done and worked great! He cut up a mid & took several inches out. Also shortened the driveshaft. Inner exhaust tuner takes some work, too, to shorten it up. But, if you've got access to a machine shop and know a GOOD welder, anything is possible!

I think it started life as a crossflow 140. By the time he was done warming it over, I'm sure it was a bit more than that. Here's a pic of the boat, but it doesn't show much of the motor. He dressed the motor up in 1974 Strangler 135 colors.

I have the short drive shaft and water tubs and shift conector for a 64. On those year V4s you could take out the 5in extion and put the short stuff in. Don't know if what I have will work on your motor.

Thanks anyway. I'm looking for something in the newer generation V-4s Like 69 or newer. I do have a 64 90 Johnson shorty that I'm looking forward to running on my G-3 some day. It looks like a low hour motor.
