TOPIC: 1987 Johnson 60 hp- throttle response problem

1987 Johnson 60 hp- throttle response problem 13 years 4 months ago #42051

This is a new rebuilt motor which is not responding when the throttle is pushed. It bogs down or stalls on ocassion. Trim adjustment has no effect. It did this when first run, but then ran fine for a day. Now bogging or stalling. Same tank of gas. Any suggestions

Who rebuilt it ???
What was the reason for the " rebuild " ??
Did anyone find what caused the problem and was it corrected ??
What testing has been done on the motor ??

It was rebuilt by a compentent mechanic who has rebuilt 100's of motors. He uses a professional motor machine shop for all work and
warrants the motor for 1 year. He has offered to have me bring the motor back to the shop for him to look at it, but with only a few weeks left in the season here in Maine I would like to continue using it until I take her out for winter storage and have him look at it then. Just wondering if there is something I can check/do now to fix it.

Motor was run and tested on my boat when I picked it up.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me.
If you hit the choke when it bogs down does it get better or worse?
Check to make sure all 3 carbs are opening at the same time, adjust if not. (throttle syncronization)
If your carbs have mixture adjusting screws, you could try adjusting them one at a time and see if that helps.
Might have one carb with a bit of dirt in it. To check which one you will need a helper. Remove cover on airbox on front of carbs. advance throttle to point where it bogs down and then have helper restrict airflow into one carb at a time. (I just put my hand loosely over carb air intake) If it gets worse, that carb is not problem. If it gets better, that carb has a fuel resrtiction in it somewhere

Thanks I'll try that, I've been think it is somehow fuel delivery related- after I deal with Irene this weekend!!

Anything else to try if that does not work-
