I'm having a hard time removing the lower unit from my 1955 10 horse Johnson. I've opened up the oval window that's half way down the leg. The two screws are out of the brass thingy. I took out all the bolts on the bottom. The lower dropped about a hakf an inch and won't go any further.

Is there something else I need to remove or loosen. This thing is not moving, I even tapped on it with a rubber mallet. I'm afraid if I get to froggy with it I'll break something.

Any help is appreciated.

The plate you removed was to disconnected the shifter rod...just taking the screws out does not always free it (BTW only the lower screw needs to be removed....just loosen the top)...be sure that the rod slides out...if not pry the linkage (the brass part) apart a bit with a screwdriver be careful not to bend the rods

Thanks I'll try that. This motor has sat for a long time. When I opened up the screw at the bottom of the lower it was dry.

I replaced the coils, points, condensors, plugs and wires. Impellar is next. Then the carb gets rebuilt. I ordered a Mikuni fuel pump too. I'm getting rid of the pressure tank.

Be best to replace the seals in the LU if you are that far apart and it was dry

I know that the shaft seal is the same for a 55 and a 57...the others should also

A little PB Blaster and prying with a screw driver and she banged right off.

No gasket on the lower and the impellar looks new! I hope this isn't a bad sign. I'll get a gasket set for the LU. Rebuild the carb and convert over to fuel pump. Then we fire her up.

Over the winter I'll paint it.

Replace the impeller...sitting it may have gotten hard or dry rot set in
