TOPIC: Evinrude/Johnson

Evinrude/Johnson 13 years 5 months ago #35630

Hi from Aus,
I'm wondering about the differences , if any , between Johnson/Evinrude engines. Specifically early 70's 3 cylinder , 65hp . Would a 65 horse Triumph have much in common with a 65 Johnson of the same year , My boat and engine are both 15 inch , the boat an early 60's girl made in Melbourne .The Evinrude color doesn't fit with the rebuild color scheme , but the orange Stinger does , though there aren't many to be found over here .
My idea is more hotrod than restoration as boat history is unavailable
Would anyone care to pass along a little company history as well as mechanical thoughts

Regards , Steve

The Johnson and Evinrude from the same year and HP will be virtually identical.
The Stinger is a little hot rodded, and there may be a few part differences on that one. I don't recall a Evinrude version of the Stinger.

This link is a good place to check for part numbers being the same or different.

Evinrude and Johnson are the same in mechanical bits.
The cosmetics were different, as in decals / covers / and paint.

Joe,
Go to Marineengine.com, they have the parts breakdowns.

Yochemin,
sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread.

I believe that the Triumph was basically an OMC so yes in answer to your question....most if not all parts should be interchangable.

Thanks all for the info and links .
There seems to be a few Johnsons of that age around ,
I guess I'm hoping to be able to change the cowling and it's lower bits to get the result I want prior to a respray
Do they offer paint colors in parts catalogues?

Cheers , steve

Steve,
If you want the true original colors, the only place I know of is www.nymarine.ca . They aren't the cheapest but the only true original color distributor. I have not used them yet but plenty of fokls on here have. The other option is take it to a local car parts store that deals in paint and see if they can scan it to match. You have to have a good section of paint to be able to do that though. If you don't care about going with original colors there are plenty of options out there.

I'm sure some other folks will chime in here on what they did.
