TOPIC: No Spark on one cylinder

No Spark on one cylinder 14 years 9 months ago #1938

I've got a 63' Evinrude 40hp that's been outa water 10 years and I'm trying to bring it back to life.

Just flushed the fuel pump, rebuilt the carb and replaced the hoses.

Problem now is I have spark only on one cylinder.
So I'm gona pull the flywheel and check points, look for wear etc.
Thinking bout changing the plug wires. Are they anything special or can I use automotive wires?
I know my problem might be the points or the coil. I havta pull it apart and see.
Any help... what is the point gap? Am I missing anything?
waiting for the manual in the mail...

These motors are famous for cracked coils.
If coils are original they need to be replaced ( cheap too ) set points using the timing marks on the flywheel ( with an ohmmeter ) replace condensers.
Might as well check for broken piston rings through bypass covers as well before spending a lot of time and money.

Plugs are .30 and points are .20 If the plug wires don't have cracks and still plyable would not worry about them. After cleaning points leave wires to them unhooked and check and with conuity tester make sure they are making contact. As far as the coils go If no cracks I would use them. I do a lot of older motors than that and make them come back to life.
