TOPIC: Looking for 1958 Johoson shipmast controls

Hello all... I am looking for the 'football' shaped johnson shipmaster controls which would have been provided with a 1958 Johnson Super Sea horse and any other accessories that might have been available.. I've seen that they offered dash plates, gauges and such.

Also, the shipmaster controls I have seen have been for the red/white base johnsons of that year.. would the supeer seahorse controls be painted white/gold?

I am no expert.

What I have learned about these in my seach for the same type but it would be able to run twin motors.

The units I have come across have been black, white, ivory and I am sure there are more.

Just as there are different colors there are different tags rivited on them.

New decals of what ever you what it to read are available and realy inexpensive.

My opinion is to get one that works great and is moderatly priced.

Change the color or decal or pull the tag of the one you have.

I got a Shipmaster off ebay to match my 55 Johnson 25 for a decent price not a show pice but works fine. I think it cost about $45

I found a 1958 sales brochure online... here is a picture of what I believe the 1958 controls should look like..

Are the guts to these controls all the same? that is, if i have a working one with a square box, and want to change it to a 'football' shaped housing, is that possible? I might just try anyways...

If you aren't looking for a perfect match.. you can also use Evinrude Simplex controls. These are the same shape, and the ID plate (Evinude Simplex) can be removed by drilling out the rivets. You could paint them the correct colors, and replace the ID plate with a vinyl decal.

Thanks alot guys! I bought the motor tonight and SUPRISE the guy gave the Evinrude Simplx controls he had in the shed with the motor, rather than take the newer box off his boat! so now I have what I need and am super happy! thanks for all the advice and help!
