Ok de-winterized the 80 hp and it started right up after a little drink of gas down the carb. Still won't idle without dieing and of course the damn start bendix decided to stay out and on the flywheel so it drained the battery while I kept trying to restart her. So I ordered a new fuel pump diaphragm (starving for gas at the end of the year), new carb gaskets (plan to take it apart also) and some new bushings and spring for the starter end.

So the question is: what's the best way to get the darn nut off the end of the starter tip when it's off the engine? Trying to pinch the gear with a piece of wood or screw drive his not working.

Jim I pulled the bedixhousing off the more but have no way of griping the gears in housing to break the but loose on the end.

Disclaimer- this is NOT expert advice...just a thought. Could you drill a piece of hardwood like scrap oak or something using a hole saw. Then rip it long ways through the hole center. Size hole so if you sandwich the gear between them and put in a vice, maybe you get enough bite without tooth damage and then see if PB blaster and a good grip would do the trick . Again - just amateur thoughts here. Hope you find a better way from experts.

Oh, now I see - that starter has a reduction gear. Service manual simply says "To disassemble starter drive, remove nut at top of drive housing. Note the relative positions of the parts while disassembling to aid in reassembly later."

Mostly work with Mercurys and Scotts, but a couple of things that might help. First, make sure the nut isn't a left hand thread to prevent spinoff when the starter accelerates. Usually there is enough thread sticking out of the nut to confirm whether it's left or right hand thread.
Once you confirm the thread direction, use an air impact to spin it off. The armature won't be able spin up as fast as the impact, especially if it's a gear drive and the nut should come off. I do that to get alternator pulley nuts off.

Thanks guys, I was able to get it loose by putting the screw driver down between the gear and the housing with the shaft running between the gear teeth. Now the question is what's the best lube to use when I out this back together? I was thinking white lithium but I'm sure that probably wasn't what was used originally.

Well she's all put back together and we ran her today, Woo Hoo!!!!!!!! She started right up and ran read used premium gas this time an she definitely liked it better than regular. Sorry no pics, no now out of the boat to make pics of us in the boa! lol
