After the first run of a motor that sat unused for over 40 years things went surprisingly well, Little hard starting but idled well, didn't stall in gear and top high speed was good but when running in the mid range on the throttle there seemed to be some "surging", motor would slow and then back up to speed and then slow again. Not big swings but enough to be really annoying. Tweaking the low and high speed idles would work for top end and idle but the pesky surge was still there at cruising speed. Would the packing washer around the high speed needles be a culprit? Thinking maybe air might be leaking in. Probably could just pull the jets and clean out the orifice and soften up those packings with some carb cleaner or oil.
Thoughts??

Cal,

Mid range is most likely where the distributor advance is in mid range travel (or at least not full advance yet). I'd check for slack in the mechanism allowing the distributor to "hunt"

Thanks, I'm going to go through the entire sync procedure, recheck my settings and make sure the timing is spot on and not a notch off.

Cal,

Set the throttle lever where it's just off of the "idle" position, grasp the distributor housing and try to gently rotate it while watching it's linkage connections.. Any "slop" in the linkage pivots will allow uncontrolled distributor movement when the engine is running and cause the "surging" symptoms you described..

Thanks, I'll be looking at it today after the daily honey do list.
