TOPIC: 1989 evinrude wiring problem

I have a 1989 evinrude 20hp motor and I bought it a few years ago for 600$ and I've never started it.

It's all electric , theres no control stick or pull rope. The electric cable comes out the side and ends in a big plug. What I'd like to do is chop this plug off so I can get to the wires and connect them to the boat , however I have no idea what each wire does and where it's suppose to go. Such as the start and stop wires and weather they neat to be connected to each other or disconnected or just need a constant 12v or what.

I tried just googling for a diagram but I'm only getting SIMILAR motors not the exact diagram. Whats worse is it seems like not a lot of people own an all electric 20hp 1989 evinrude so I'm just getting a whole lot of nothing. The motor was expensive , what can i do to get it running?

I don't quite understand what you mean by "all electric". Assuming it us electric start and shift? Try this link.

Electric shift went away in the late 60's/early 70's. And I believe the smallest electric shift ever made was a 33HP.

You are going to need controls to operate it, best to get a used set now, it will have the electric harness included.

The motor already has controls i just need the electrical figured out as there's no way to turn the motor on or off.

That book doesn't seem to have an electrical diagram in it.

If you already have the controls and the motor that has the wires connected it's just a matter of matching colors. Each wire has a function and each wire is a different color. The colored wires on the controls will match the colored wires on the motor plug. I'll keep searching for a schematic and post if I find one.

If for whatever reason you are determined to chop off the plug keep at least 6" of wire on it so you can reconnect it if necessary. That being said I did dig up an old service manual I had many years ago in a box in a damp storage shed. Book worms got to some of the pages and the pages are very brittle but I did manage to scan a few. The missing segments were eaten up by the creepy critters. Other than that it's about the most I can help with from this end.
Going to give Ken's add a picture/attachment box a really good tryout. If you have a way to print the pictures out they can probably be taped together for better viewing.
