When I got back from the coast this summer, pulled the prop and discovered fishing line around my prop shaft.Checked the LU oil and sure enough was slightly milky. Got a new seal in from eBay today and need to know which sealant is right.

Jim, assuming this is on your old JohnRude V4, I usually use Permatex No. 3 aviation-type gasket dressing on the outside of the seal. Haven't had any fall out yet!

You should be able to pick up a small can with the brush-in-cap at your local NAPA.

If you happen to have some OMC "Sealer 1000" or its replacement "Type M" - (aka 3M #847) kicking around, that'll work fine as well.

As will Merc "Perfect Seal".

I would only use RTV as a last resort.

Ed,I was leaning more towards the moto seal, but I'll check on the no.3 . Heck,I still have a little 5200 left. I could rub a tiny bit around the outside of the seal just enough to seal it up.

If you put 5200 around there the prop won't turn....ever :)

Jim, I hadn't noticed the Motoseal label, I thought it was just another type of RTV.

I'm sure it would do a great job on the seal as well. Looks like this stuff is similar to Kawasaki-bond or Yama-bond.

I recall many years ago sealing up the crankcase on my 1972 Kawi 500 Triple with the grey Kawi sealer; what a fun bike that was. Wish I still had it!

Cheers.........ed

Ed,thanks for your help. That motoseal is good stuff. I used it on my fuel tank fittings on my Aristocraft Nineteen. Works great in a gasoline enviroment.
