TOPIC: Question on my 1959 Four Fifty

I would like to identify the year/motor that the lower end came off of. The longshaft lower end has obviously been swapped out on my motor. The prop and prop nut do not appear to be the same that came on the 59.

The blue color would suggest a 1960's Evinrude 60 HP or maybe a 60's manual shift 75/80 HP? Eventually in the 60's OMC added a ball-detent to the propeller shaft that helped eliminate wear to the shift dog from the operator not "snapping" the shift lever in and out of gear.

Thank you, Andy. My knowledge is limited on these things. I have noticed that there are some variations across those years but they are all very similar. Say what! The help given on this site still amazes me.

To my (inexperienced) eye, it looks more like the streamlined gearcase introduced on the 75hp, than the original "fat" gearcase.

Compare this 1959 (50hp) diagram:

I think Gale used the 75hp lower on their 60hp version of the 50hp, and the 60hp got picked up by the "name" brands when the Gale brand was discontinued.

I was able to match the prop nut on this one with the one on my motor. 1968 65 hp might be the one.
