Took the boat out for the 1st time today since I bought it on Friday. Ran it in the barrel Saturday and it started right up idled smooth and quiet.
Launched today ran perfect from idle to full throttle great day so far! Ran around the lake for about half hour smooth as could be.. was slowing down and it just died like you shut the key off...Would not restart or even try to start. Took of cowling. When I crank the engine it appears that fuel is coming out of the front of the carb...
From all appearances this motor has been well taken care of and looks almost new inside. Person I got it from says he had an "Evinrude Man" tune it up recently.
Before I start ripping and tearing (ordered manuals Sunday) where would I start or is there something simple I should look at 1st.

Thank you

Make sure you have spark, easy test, remove plugs, connect to wires and ground base of plugs to engine, crank engine and look for visible spark.
If you have kill switch make sure it has not "killed" the engine.
You seem to have fuel.

Multiple things must have happened all at once...Now I am really worried.

When I squeeze the primer bulb, fuel comes out of the hole right above the carb screen.

AND as I was standing there studying how to remove the carb it looked like a tiny bit of smoke was coming from the steering knuckle...When I touched it, it was RED HOT....Burned my thumb...I took off the pos cable real quick and started feeling the cables but none of them was even the slightest bit warm....I feel like I have opened Pandoras Box....And at 9:30 am today the motor was running like a champ...

when your saying the steering knuckle was burning hot?

did it look like the engine might have overheated??
was the lower unit hot also by the steering pivot??

if you haven't checked it,,, it might be wise to check the water pump..

as for fuel leak.. possible gunk in the carb.. stuck in needle and seat? flooding the engine???

Not at all, its battery voltage grounding to it somehow. If I pull the positive or the harness connector it cools off..

For those following the weird scenario.....Turns out that the key switch terminal was grounded to the metal tube from the updated steering that was put on the boat. The previous owner had wrapped it in tape but in the 1st 30 minutes of my new ownership I guess it rubbed through and was trying to ground the battery voltage all the way back to the steering arm which is steel and must have been more attractive than the motor case.....I guess in 59 they used no fuses or breakers so there was nothing to trip....So I added a fuse block and cleaned up the mess with the starter switch wiring.

Carb is still puking gas out the overflow but even after the direct grounding of the power wire it still spins over fine and had good spark....Just to be sure I ordered carb kit, coils, points, cond,wires,plugs.....

Yep if I'm not sure I always get a new fuel pump, carb kit and impellor.
