What position are the levers supposed to be in when starting the motor?
First time trying to start it and the starter motor is turning but not engaging. Wondering if I have a safety that is not right or something simple I need to do. I have a full shop manual on the way for the motor but its not here yet. Motor is 75hp sea king magneto. Sorry for the stupid question...Thank you

Stupid question? Not at all. The only stupid question is the one not asked. I believe the F/R (black) lever should be straight up in neutral. The throttle should be moved forward to its highest allowable position somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 throttle.

If the starter is spinning but not engaging, its a bad Bendix drive on the starter, or stuck. Disconnect the battery first, then see if the Bendix freely rotates up to engage the flywheel by hand. Be careful here.
