TOPIC: Disappointed

Disappointed 13 years 2 months ago #47441

I don't want to mention names, but, I bought an outboard from a gentleman who owns a business south of here. It's a Bearcat 55. The motor is in very good condition. The motor was supposed to come with the controls. When I went to pick up the motor, I paid the man, in cash, and he came back later and said he couldn't find the controls, but, when he did, he would mail them to me. That was a month ago. Every time I call, I get some excuse. For me, this is a poor way to do business.
If there is anyone out there that has a shift control unit for a 1966 Bearcat 55, please let me know. I'm just very disappointed with this man's behavior. I'm a disabled veteran, and I don't like to be treated like this.

Well, sorry to hear of your bad experience with the person south of you, hopefully someone here may be able to help. I can understand your -resentment- of how this guy acted, which he would of done this to you just as he would of done it to anybody else regardless of the fact that you sacrificed your time...and your body to serve your country, which if the truth was ever told the non veterans would be rather shocked to really know just how veterans are really treated. I could tell you some story's that would stand your short hairs -up- about the VA. Good luck with your search and welcome aboard...and if you haven't heard it enough all ready, Thank you for serving. I know..I know sounds rather hollow but I am being sincere.

Is there anything else that would work? I'm not familiar with them.

Any Morse control box set up for 2 cables will work - these need to be the Teleflex style cables like the 33C. Those have the correct ends for the clips and connections. Some of the old Teleflex "universal" boxes will work as well. I've even seen people use the old OMC 2 lever boxes with them. You can also use a Chrysler box. All will work.

The fancy Homelte control also had a built - in key ignition, choke button, overheat warning horn, and warm up lever. But you can put the ignition and choke button on a dash panel like most boats have. The Morse controls have a warm-up function. You don't have to use the homelite/bearcat box.

I remember when you first called me talking about the controls that he was supposed to provide.
I have them in several styles.

One thing I've learned is patience working with old iron, if you don't need them right away, wait, they may turn up and arrive in the mail. I've purchased at least two of them off ebay for about $25 wo/cables and with shipping they were $35 to $40.

Thanks, Billr. I really appreciate the help. At the end of the month, I'll have a little money and place an order. At first it will be the manual and some assembly parts. The controls will be a little later. I'm going to contact this yutz one more time and then I'll pretty much have to forget about it. Always look on the good side. I have good people like you who are willing to help.

Well, I spoke to the people that were supposed to have given me the controls that came with the Bearcat that I bought. They said that they still coudn't find it. I talked to Bill and he said that he would sell me one at a good price knowing my situation. I told that to these people to write me a check for that amount and post date it for 30 days. That way, this will be an incentive for them to look. If they find it within 30 days, they can have their check back. They also said that I was being very fair. I told them that I always wnt to generate good business relationships. I just don't like being put off like that. So, we'll see how this plays out.

Update on this issue with the control box. I sent these people a return receipt plus a self-addressed stamped envelope to send me a check for $60.00. Not happening. I have never in my life, met such flakey people - ever. What now? Small claims. I have a copy of the add and all the necessary documents. I mean, this really bites. I do appreciate all the support from my boating brothers, but these people have a responsibility. I don't want an after market control box. I want the one I paid for. The only thing I need is an add showing me how much the Homelite costs, or, if Billr will send me a quote on what one will cost. I will contact Bill later. Thanks again for all the support. I'll keep you updated.

Craig,

I just looked in my records, I'm just about positive that the motor you bought is the same one I sold a certain shop carb kits for.

Call me tomorrow or Monday and I'll share names and details if you identify the same shop.
Anyway, I propose that we close out this thread as I've already told you I have what you need. We can make this a happy ending for you and get back to happy threads in this forum.

Happy ending. I spoke to the gentleman last week and he said that he would send me a check. And guess what. It came today. Thank God. It took him 2 months, but, I guess the squeeky wheel get the grease. I guess we can close out this thread. Thanks for all the support. I'm starting to put the Bearcat back together! Billr has been a great help.

Updating to what's going on, I'm Going to San Diego, CA. to Harrah's Casino for the week. I phoned Rich and told him that if he could find the control unit, I will pick it up on the way back from San Diego. I will then give him his check back-everybody wins. If not, then I'll give the check to Billr and then everybody still wins. So, by the end of the month, I'll have my controls. It's about time!

Well, I'm back. I had a great time. I called the Boat place that was supposed to find the control unit. I spoke to Nicole and she said that she looked everywhere, but, couldn't find it. At the end of the month, I will send Bill the check that they wrote me and Bill will send me the one he has saved for me. Hopefully, at this point, this will be the end of this. I'll have to wait and see.

I deposited the check that the outboard shop sent me and it seemed to have cleared. I'm glad it's over. I guess this thread can be removed. Thanks, everyone for the great support.

Well, I'm glad that is settled.
When I picked up my Bearcat, everything was there. Big bucks $150.00 :)
