TOPIC: electric fuel pump

electric fuel pump 13 years 9 months ago #27471

I have a bearcat,1970, one of the blue block ones. The last time out I was having trouble getting full throttle. I suspect the fuel pump which is the original one. I would like to put an electric fuel pump on it and was wondering where you guys get them.

Steve: Here is a copy of a former post.

Mark: A very good guess! I used a Facet #1102. I was after a pump in the 1 PSI range as to not over pressure the carbs forcing fuel past the system and into the motor or out the overflow holes. (If fuel was able to getting past the needle valves) If everything is working like it is suppose to a 3 PSI pump would work fine also.

Although in my humble opinion I would think you have some other problem than the fuel pump.

Thank you Mike!

The manufacture pump number is #1102 (15 gal./hr @ 1 PSI, 1/8 NPT)

The part number of the oil filter on that motor is NAPA 4104 and that crosses to Wix 24104. I have never used that Wix filter because I have a NAPA store near me.

Just to let you guys know, the factory manual says 2psi at 5000rpm.
Not saying the 1psi won't work since most of us don't hold these puppies at 5K rpm or higher, but just letting everyone know what the factory published.

The commonly available Facet pumps at the local auto store used to come in 3-4psi or 7psi, rough. There are plenty of my customers using the 3-4psi pump, the ones using the 7psi have had problems.

NOTE: I just looked at the factory literature to confirm the above, and yes it says if pressure less than 2 psi at 5,000rpm replace the pump. So hope this helps everyone.

Bill: Thanks for the information. I am going to change out my electric fuel pump with the 3 PSI model. I don't want to take any chances that it maybe short on pressure. What a shame as I paid around $50 for this unit. (Anyone need a 1 PSI pump for cheap?)

The lesson for me is use the resources available on this board to research the changes you want to make before spending money. Chances are someone has already done what you are proposing to do. Know need to reinvent the wheel.

So I am the proud owner of a new to me F block Bearcat engine. I am installing an electric fuel pump (i understand there is no rebuild kit available for my "AC" mechanical fuel pump. My simple question is, what positive power terminal should I wire the electric fuel pump too?
Thanks Matt

Wire to the orange wire on the terminal block, it will then be on only when the key is on.

Ordered an electric fuel pump for the Bearcat. It is Model#1103 from Pegasus (sp) $48.99 free shipping. 3#psi.
Talked to Bill R. last night. He said that one is the best one for these engines.
Also ordered some parts for my Bearcat from him.
He has a lot of Homelite / Bearcat parts for us Homelite/Bearcat fans.
A great guy. Will help you out a bunch!!!

Got the fuel pump yesterday. Even comes with a fuel filter. I hope to mount it on the Bearcat this spring before I put it on my pontoon. :woohoo:

I now have two boats with Homelites with electric fuel pumps. Both work as advertised ---but--- I don't think I will do electric fuel pumps on any other motors. They are to noisy! They click very rapidly and very loud. I find the noisy very disquieting. I have one of the pumps mounted on the side of the motor and the other mounted on the inside of the transom. Both make the same loud clicking noise. I even went as far as to wrap the transom mounted pump with insulation and isolate it from the transom itself in an attempt to quite it down and it was still to noisy. I called the manufacture and they told me there was nothing wrong with the pumps and that is how they were.
