TOPIC: Prop Shaft

I've come across something a little different in one of my lower units, this collar that the output bearing rides on. Reading through the later manual it states "Later models used a tolerance ring which is installed in a machined groove in the shaft. Further down it states that the tolerance ring is no longer used. I do not see any reference to this ring in the parts breakdown. Is this the tolerance ring they are referring to?

The tolerance ring was used on some of the early Homelites, it's on the early parts lists, part 13. That looks like an early lu painted blue from an original white? Do you have removeable driveshaft splined on both ends? Is it one of those motors from down south of us shall we say?
I believe I have tolerance rings.

The quote came from the Bearcat F model manual, I also have the Homelite manual which I find no reference to a tolerance ring. This unit has the removable drive-shaft, engine is a '68 so I'm sure it's been replaced with an earlier unit. It's not one of the down south engines, I bought this one it Sept here in town. Is this the tolerance ring or is this some other modification done at sometime?

look in the lower illustrated parts list for models above serial no. 1,400,000, see page 6 & 7 , index no. 13, it's pictured on page 6 and listed on page 7. they were used up through C model if I recall.
yes that's the tolerance ring, i am pretty sure I have them but not yet inventoried, email me if you need one.

Bill, I don't show it in either of the parts lists I have. #13 is the prop shaft in both books. I think it's an early manual with a late parts list as both books lists look the same. If that's the tolerance ring I don't need one, just trying to figure out what "it" was.

The parts manual I got from Bill for the Homelite model 460 A1 and 460 A2 has that tolerence ring #13 Part # 91184 on the prop shaft.
What it does I don't know. I got a rebuilt L/U from Bill so I don't know if it has one on it. All I had to do was to intsall it on my motor. It runs great that's all I care.

This earlier parts list and manual came with the second Bearcat, the one from Lapine, OR and it came from Ed. The parts list looks the same as the other manual which came with the 4th and 5th Homelite which was one of the ones I bought the lower unit from you for, it's for the late F model. So yes the one from Ed is surely corrupted. The F model one references the tolerance ring in the servicing section. I'm still learning all the differences, so I'm assuming now that there were three different prop shafts.

Ahead of their time..........twice! Once as the Crosley and the second time as an outboard. Amazing that this engine was developed in the early 40's, became a powerplant for an automobile, affordable for the masses later in the 40's and we didn't see another OCH engine from the big three till Pontiac came out with their OHC 6 in '67, twenty years after the Crosley!

With this tolerance ring I'm assuming the smaller output bearing was also used, is that correct?

Finally figured this out! The early small bearing housing is close to 1/8" taller the large housing and I kept trying to put it together with the large bearing thrust plate. It doesn't work, but it does with the correct thrust plate. It can be a real pain when you buy a basket case!
