TOPIC: Spark Plug Gap

Got a Bearcat 55. Could someone remind me what the plug gap is with the Pertronix ignition? Can't find the info.

OK, finally found a 3 year old post from '4stroke' that says after installing the Pertronix unit he gapped the plugs at .040". Is that the general consensus? Yes/no?

That doesn't sound unreasonable Steve, I think "normal" gap is usually around .035".

Well, it's been running fine at .040 but besides looking like I gapped them with a box nail the plugs were on the black side. Book says .025 with stock points so maybe I'll split the difference.

Black wet or black dry? Wet would likely be oil consumption and dry would be running rich (too much gas).

I posted this same answer on another site, but will share it here too, it's my own two cents worth.

Spark plug gap is more determined by the coil output. If you still run an original style coil with the resistor wire, the gap needs to be 0.25. If you run a 12v high output coil, you can increase the gap to 0.40.
