TOPIC: Speed

Speed 12 years 4 months ago #67497

After fixing the leaks in the trim around the sponsons the next question is speed. With a 650 i dont expect to hit 50 but what can i do to boost the speed alittle bit. I have a custom three blade 18 pitch brass prop on the motor currently and on the last gun run i hit 43.1mph. Any ideas to hit 45?

i dont think that polishing the bottom would make a difference because at that speed the only thing in the water is the motor and maybe 6 inches of the boat.

ballance and trim are the only thing besides the prop. put ALL the weight in the back, close to the transom as possible.

I'm not sure how I would attempt this on an outboard, but on my Evinrude Playmate, my attempts to quiet the noise included adding a bilge blower to the intake which seems to act as a low grade supercharger. The boat definitely has a boost when the blower starts up. (I don't run it at low speed or idle. I is connected to a mercury switch on the spark advance)

You can run a 19p 3 blade to get around 45@5600. Jim S. was getting good speed with his 650. What was your rpm's? pic's? Guessing the brass prop is cupped perhaps, or not? Speeds being best imo with light wind chop..Mike Anfossi hit 45 with a Merc 500 but had a pad and special prop :)

Prop and engine height seem to be key for me. Like Ponyboy says, get the weight back, you want minimal wetted area to "fly" the boat at speed.

My best speed with the Merc 650 on the G-3 was running a 3-blade brass, cupped, 21" pitch prop. I now have that prop on my Merc 1000 as that prop is listed for the Merc 1000 in the owners manuel for the 1969 Merc 1000.

Hello Ake, nice shot of your G3! I have several shots of your boat on my PC. Any other recent photos of your boat?
