Friends, am I better using a gasket with sealer between lower gearcase and upper gearcase/water pump sections rather than only using something easy to remove like Permatex 51817 Anaerobic Gasket Maker? The oem repair manual say use the gasket and Permatex #1, but I want to be able to remove next time without the trouble that will be. So I could use the gasket with the Permatex 51817, but the instructions call for using PERMATEX Activator for Anaerobics 24163 when using a gasket and the stuff is $18 for a can! See photos: gasket, and gasket in place on lower gearcase. Thanks!

You could use Permatex #3 aviation-type non-hardening gasket dressing. It'll never harden and shouldn't be too difficult to clean up on the next disassembly.

BTW you don't have to use the activator for the Loctite 518 anaerobic sealer; it just takes a bit longer to reach full cure if you don't. Be sure the area is thoroughly degreased or it won't cure. I've sealed lots of crankcase flanges with 518 and no cure agent, and never had a leak.

Thanks Ed. Would carb cleaner work well for degreasing? What about the gasket - better to use one, or go without it?

OMC designed the gearcase to be used with a gakset and I don't know what if any effect on clearances would be if you deleted the gasket. You could always use anaerobic with the gasket if you're having any issues with sealing.

Carb cleaner should degrease the parts plenty good.

Thanks again. Probably doesn't impact your comment on OMC, but this is a Chrysler/Sea King

Why, yes indeed it is! Looks very similar to the old V4 gearcases. Guess I better go get that eye exam! :S
