Hi
Need  some help with my late 50s Westbend 35hp what is missing in the groove on the crankcase, is it a O-ring?Thanks Carl. [image/]

With no knowledge of your motor I would guess one of two things. Most likely that is the rear main seal. The old school car motors used what looked like a piece of rope which it was somewhat like all be it special made for the job. The other thing would be a thrust washer. That would be on the crank and mate with your groove. Those would be my guesses.

The ebay item id given is invalid, no result has been sentThe slot may have held a snap ring or some other type of retainer to keep the crank bearing in position.
There are some parts manuals on eBay which would help you identify the piece (if any): |

My manual for the later Chrysler version of this motor shows nothing in that groove. Little changed in the later motors really. I suspect its just a convenience groove to stop the cutter in while boring the different bores.

Hi
I have a copy of a 35hp west bend model no 35801 parts list, I have no model no/plate on my outboard, it has had a hard life, I stared to overhaul this motor over a year ago and never remember a O-ring or clip, but I just need to know so I can start to rebuild the motor. Thanks Carl.

Thinking about it some more I was thinking about a main seal but it is a two stroke it doesn't need one.

Yes they do need a seal on each end of the crank and between each cylinder. The crankcase pumps the mixture into the combustion chamber. If any of the seals leak it will run like crap.

my 67 45hp is the same way. nothing goes there, i bet it is in fact just a transition for the machine cutters. it does take a seal, probably 4016-1, same p/n top and bottom

Why the cream white later Chrysler paint and not the blue/white WB scheme?
BTW I agree with that groove being a process artifact. |
