I found this one that has not been wet since 92.
It is a 1969 Hewescraft.

Great find! What is that on the lower unit? Can you please post a picture of the lower unit? Very intersting! Looks like a pump of some kind.

That is a jet pump. It has an impellor and an intake at the front. The intake has a grate so you don't injest anyting into the pump.
You just take the lower unit off of the motor and bolt it on.
It has an orofice inside that provides cooling up into the motor.
It squirts the water out the rear through a nozzle that is necked down to get more velocity. The reverse is a "bucket" that drops down in front of the nozzle and directs the flow down and forward.
They are not a very efficient form of propulsion, in my opinion.
A prop has to push, a jet has to suck and push. You also have to apply mor throttle while turning going slow. Dont get me wrong, ther are jet boats that flat haul a##. There is mothing like the sound of a big block throwing a 100 foot rooster tail.
We call them bubble squirters.
They do have there advantages. They are very low maintenance. You can run in very shallow water. They are good in our rivers on the fishing boats.
I hope I did not offend anyone out there with my opinion about jet propulsion an boats, but I have owned them and I like props.
