Just picked up this 1968 Smoker Craft... Got it torn apart an will be putting in a new transom. I need to ask how to go about putting in a floor and also I'll need to remove the old seat brackets now through bolted to the hull. I want to replace the old rusty bolts. Any suggestions on how to be sure I make everything water tight as at least the rear seat bolts through the hull will be below the water line..... This will be my first attempt at an aluminum hull.

Actually I will need to plug the bolt holes below the waterline. It appears the PO put in new seat brackets and they are not where they should be... JB Weld ??

Just saw a video on youtube about using rivets with 5200... Looks like that's the way to go.....

I just finished redoing an 86 Smoker craft. My son and I removed every rib and replaced every rivet in the bottom .I used a sealer to glue every rib before reriveting and then I sealed the whole bottom with Gluvit ,one quart sealed the whole bottom , best $50.00 spent.
You will have to put a stringer or two down the middle and then screw to the edge of ribs heres pictures of my bottom.

Paul, just pull up your post and go to the bottom right corner and hit the edit button and ad another pic. you can do this many times but you have to go back to the original post every time. give it a try. frog

Thanks for the info on putting in a floor. When I remove the old seat brackets the bolt holes will be about 7/16". Guess I'll put on an aluminum plate on the outside and drill new rivet holes and seal the back of the plate with 5200 and rivet it in place.

Just ordered some closed end blind dome head rivets to take care of all the holes needed to be plugged. From
www.rivetsinstock.com/rivets/blind-rivets/closed-end-blind-rivets.html Probably have them in a couple days.. In the mean time I'll get the outer hull scuffed up/sanded for primer and top coat. The bottom hull will remain aluminum. The interior will get painted. I was told on another boat building forum that adding two stringers for putting down a floor would "Compromise the structural integrity" Not sure how that could happen ? |

Took about 5 hours to remove the rusted and corroded bolts, sand and clean the trim parts but looks like it was worth the effort. Filled about 20 holes in the front bow plate with epoxy.

Got the starboard side stripped and sanded.... Came out very nice.. Recently found out it is a 1961 not a 1968. First year of production.
