The ride home was a little nerve racking, as she was sitting pretty close to the back window of the jeep and no trailer lights....

I've offloaded plenty of boats from roller trailers in my past as well as loaded them (heck even loaded a boat on top of another boat on the trailer by myself before.) But this old girl did not want to budge a bit. But no worries, I always win ;)

I know, my shed needs a bit of attention and I aim to get to that as soon as I can, I've a bit over 8,000 square feet of 30 year old cow manure, hay, misc junk and the little ladies stuff, can be a bit overwhelming at times.

as you can see, the trailer needs a lot of attention, funny this boat doesn't have any holes in the bottom of it from all those bunk brackets sticking up everywhere!

sitting there on the blocks like she is, I can see that the cabin bulkhead must be a key integral component to her structure. she twists a little when I push on the side of the bow.

That's awesome you got it home safely. The boat looks like it has lots of potential, the nice thing about there being only a shell is that you can start from scratch and totally make the boat your own. I think I would try a pocket style door instead of a swinging cabin door.

If you do go and buy my brothers evenrude, he may have a windshield you could use, but you would have to get the measurements off of your boat to see if it would fit.

Also if you want to post multiple pictures, post the first one then hit the edit button and post the second picture and so on like that.

and time to get down into the bilge. Tore up the floor from the cabin back to the transom so far, as you all can see, and as I suspected, the stringers are shot, I doubt if they will even come out whole enough to make patters from them. maybe if they dry out a bit they may come out good enough to make patterns from them.

yes sir, exact same engine. I seen your post, sure looks great waterwings. Have you had her out on the water yet? I'm kinda thinkin I need to shorten the lower to a short shaft. but lookin at your transom, we're about the same there. hows she handle?

Hadn't seen that video, that's way cool thanks for posting that. You shouldn't have to shorten yours. It definitely handles different than the Fat Fifty did. The boat plains off almost right away now. She gets a little squirrelly at about 3/4 throttle than is fine at full, not sure what to make of that yet. I think I ned to do some more tweaking with the prop and motor tilt. That will have to wait until Spring.

ok went out and measured the transom height and the lower on the motor. my transom is 16" and currently the motor measures 22 1/4" to the cavitation plate. the spacer measures 5" so by deleting the spacer, it puts me at 17 1/4" from top of transom to cavitation plate putting the plate 1 1/4" below the boat thus improving my x dimension and performance.
Sorry just using this post to log notes.

Re:And so it begins, 1959 Dorsett Catalina 11 years 1 month ago #86211

I didn't realize your transom was so short. Yes then your going to want to get a short shaft and remove the spacer. You'll also need the shorter water tubes or make the current ones you have shorter.

Thanks Bob, was just reading about your motor, I see you put a "newer" 80 hp powerhead on her. That's pretty cool.
I'm worried about finding the short D Shaft for the project. With the cold weather setting in, I think I will focus on the engine until it warms up this spring. And your powerhead swap has my gears turning as this motor has scored cylinder walls, I've yet to investigate. Think a hundred hp v4 would work under this hood? lol

That Dorsett looks like a neat project! I am glad that I do not have a boat that large. It might take me until the next century - and I will not be around that long.

Seriously, you do not have to have the old stringers for patterns. You can determine where the floor is to be located and measure from the floor level to the bottom at about one foot intervals. You then end up with a profile for the stringer. Cut the new stringer, bond it to the bottom, add glass and resin reinforcements along the sides, and you are good to go.

My floor is not installed yet but you can read my writeup regarding my 1963 JetFlite and see how I did my stringers. If you have any questions, I will be glad to talk with you by phone. My home office number is: 630-232-6063.

If your windshield is plastic, you can get a new one made at EDS Plastics in South Lyon, MI. I had Ed make a new one for my boat. It is a full wraparound with a compound curve. He used the old one for a pattern and made a beautiful new one that is a perfect duplicate. The cost was $ 560 and well worth it for the result achieved.

Thanks Kern, That is a pretty good idea of one foot stations and cross sections. I may level her up and shoot a laser level and log a table of offsets for each stringer, from the existing stringers, to help others who find themselves doing the same project. I will include the transom and the bulkheads.
You caught me in the middle of logging some notes for the short shaft conversion for the starflight.

Short Shaft Evinrude Starflight IV 75hp V4:
(Dimensions to be verified)
Long shaft, Drive shaft length: 30.75"

part number 379883 = long shaft

("Driveshaft, 75 Hp Johnson / Evinrude v4 1960 Long. This 30.75" Driveshaft 3/4" diameter is from a 1960 75 Hp v4 Evinrude 50523 outboard")
Short Shaft, Drive shaft length: 25.75" x .75 DIA.

part number 379882 = short shaft

Shake,
Actually I just swapped them housing on the 80 Hp. Took the outer housings from the '62, restored it then put it on the 80hp. Lower unit, mid section etc is the 80 HP.

Have you tried just sending in the registration form with a bill of sale to the Wisconsin DNR, and seeing if you get lucky, and they just reregister it in your name?

I called them and talked to them today, they told me since it was last registered in California, that I needed the title to the boat. seems California has been titling all boats since 1960. So my options now are as I did, send in the info 70 form to get the info on the last registered owner, then send out a reg 277 form to the last reg. owner and have them fill it out and sign the boat over to me and then the title is mailed out to me. or if the mailed out form is returned to me, I then send the unopened returned form to CA DMV stating that My efforts have been unanswered, then CA will issue me a title for the boat.
It's a bit of a pain, but once it is done and over with, I can start putting money into the boat.

I did the same in Iowa for the registration for my old falls flyer, luckily the guy lived in the same town I was in and he was very helpful in the process of getting the registration for me.
I am hoping for the same with this boat as well.

no, none of the paperwork has shown up yet, guessing it never will. I should call them up and see what's going on with it. I can't put any more money into it till I get it titled. was hoping to have it at least up n running by this summer.

The paperwork has to be sent via registered mail and keep the ticket. If after 15 days the paperwork isn't returned either filled out or unopened you can take the ticket to the DMV and they will issue the title. Just talked to the DMV today. I am going through the exact same thing myself right now.
