I am using the Ford Wimbeldon White Duplicolor paint on my 35A is almost exact compared to the old parts. And alot cheaper than Old mercs or NY Marine.. I dont know how it will hold up against fuel though...

This Color was recomended for the cloud white by several on the site as was the Duplicolor paint. The Swivel bracket in this pic is original paint and the rest is the Wimbeldon just for reference.
Goes on real nice also.

stashm2, wow, hope mine turns out like that, looks like it just came off the factory floor. I'll check out the other sites. Looks like the color is called dull aluminum charcoal which was a 1956 color. Making my black look better. I could dull the black by mixing a little silver in it and then clear coat with a matt finish. Should be interesting.

Work on some mahogany trim today. Made custom rings for the control openings and did two step pads. A few other things to put on the shelf for final assembly after paint in spring.

The original step pads were nothing but rotted rubber that would crumble and fall apart in your hands. Decided to bring the mahogany theme of the dash and steering to the rest of the boat.

Here are the pads.

And the rings to finish off the control entry holes.

Very well done, Cal. I agree, those custom touches are going to make her a real beauty when she's finished, IMHO. What are you using to seal the mahogany, if you don't mind my asking? (You know me, always trying to gather knowledge! :P )

Thanks guys. As you know it's the little touches that add up to something different. The mahogany is pretty rot resistant but I sealed everything with Cabot sealer, it's what I had around and is almost like water, soaks in and then dries. Put on the minwax stain and then sealed that with Krylon matte, when that dried I put three coats of clear gloss laquer.
Have to replace my garage door opener motor today, the gears stripped and can't wait a week for mail order replacements, also replacing the valve cover gasket on my Jeep. Going to be a busy day. The Packers have a bye anyway so nothing on the booob tube.
I want to begin forming and installing the aluminum trim that goes on the raw edges of the boat interior. Have to get the propane torch out for that job.

Re:1959 Herters rebuild 12 years 11 months ago #54107

On the motor if you use a clear laquer over the white it will seal it and help with any of the staining issues. I just repainted my truck with Van Sickle paint from the local farm supply store. It comes in gallon, and quart cans as well as rattle can. It worked great and haven't had any staining from the diesel. I also used the clear on the hood of my Homelite and havent had any issues there either.

64_Express,
What color will match the Homelite/Bearcat white?

64 express, good idea, if it can withstand diesel it could handle anything. Didn't know you could paint lacquer over enamel, thought it would lift.
Worked on more stripping on the of the motor today. Really time consuming and tedious.
Who makes a good primer for the aluminum??, would like to get it in a rattle can.

I would use the DupliColor primer and primer sealer - I did that on my 700 Merc and I turned out worked out beautiful.

I used the Duplicolor Self Etching primer that was ment to work with the paint I used on mine. Figured I would stick with one brand and one Paint line seems decent so far....

Re:1959 Herters rebuild 12 years 11 months ago #54148

Duplicolor stuff is very nice especially if you are trying to match colors. Elgindave I just used the Van Sickle bright white for my hood since I had a quart of it left after painting my truck. It is a bit "brighter" than my hood was but I think that the GM white is pretty close to what the Homelite hood should have been.

Rick, thanks for the link. I have one that came with the boat and it's in good condition just need the pitot pickup and tube which I can get just about anywhere. I see by the picture that the center of the dial is a shade darker than the rest, I thought mine was discolored with age but now there is something to compare to and it really isn't discolored at all. :)

Finally got back to some serious work the past few days. Been working of the wiring hookups and instalation of the ignition and switches. Fabricated two backing plates for the switches out of 1/8" aluminum.

Tail light wiring

bow light wires

Anchor light wires

Ignition key and choke button on the starboard side, tail lights, running/anchor light and horn switches/button on the port.

Fuse block and wires are all in place and just need to be plugged onto the connectors. Hope that's the end of drilling and glass grinding. Last job I'm not looking forward to will be the fabrication of a frame for the gas tank and installation.

Hey Bob, got all the way up to 37 deg today, a tropical heat wave, snow tomorrow.
Did some more odds and ends today. Painted the top hat for the Mark 58 and the two Dyna Float caps. Also installed the whatchamacallit plate on the transom. Cut some diamond plate for the two Gator trailer fender end pieces but didn't snap a picture of those, not until they are finished off and installed on the fenders.

The whatchamacallit plate.

The motor top and float covers. I'll be making a new rope handle out of mahogany since the one on here is split.

Is there any trick to polishing up the brushed aluminum on the motor??

Side note, I'm changing my avitar every few days to keep me reminded of better days at Bar Harbor.

Re:1959 Herters rebuild 12 years 11 months ago #54602

I love the diamond plate on the transom. Looks great! The hood and float covers came out awesome! As far as the brushed aluminum on the motor not sure on that one. I know Mothers works real well but I also know that if used over a period of time it will make it shine! Used it on a brushed pewter finished belt buckle in my prior enlisted Navy days and it eventually turned that buckle into bright shiny pewter! I think there was something in the Merc section but can't find it right now.

Shiny was always good for inspections...
The diamond plate has to come off one more time to put 5200 on the screws to seal 'em up.
99.9% of the Mark 58 is stripped 'cept for some charcoal on the lower. Washed it all down with lacquer thinner and just about ready for prime. Mounted the rectifier in it's final resting place. Tomorrow I'll start the starter rope handle.

Naked Mark (58)

Rectifiers' finished.

Spent a few relaxing hour fabricating the new rope handle.

Laminated some 100 year old African mahogany together.
Traced out the old handle and rough cut it out.
Drilled a 13/16" hole for the rope holder and a 3/8" hole for the rope itself. I lined the rope hole with copper tube to prevent the wood from splitting later on.
Get the trusty Dremil out and dusted off.
Some stain and finish.

Now just have to install the new gromet on the case, buff the aluminum edges and put it on the shelf.

Thanks guys. Put new gromets on the choke shaft and rope entrance today. Taking the day off tonight. The "to do" list is beginning to shorten up. Tomorrow the last two pieces of mahogany get cut out and finished up. John, there will be a piece on the back side of the front seats to match the dash, then to fabricate the angle iron frame for the bow gas tank support and get that ready to mount. I bid on l-e-d nav lights to install in the fancy Herters bow piece. If they are as described on Ebay they should fit nicely with some "inovation" of course.
A few more projects on the trailer also, fenders, winch post, and lights.
Below zero temps the last two days so even my garage gets too chilly for painting. When it warms up a little I can get primer on the Mark 58.

Yes we got the snow ( 12" )and we also got the north wind out of Canada , with the wind chill we had -1 and that hardly ever happens with Snow. We get the cold northeaster but it's usually windy clear & cold. We are not used to it around here. I work at a resort in Food & Beverage and had to stay in the hotel a couple days because we had no staff . One night we had 390 people call in that could/ would not make it to work. Back to rain and ugly now and it feels real good to me !!!

The LED nav lights came in the mail today. Did some roughing on them. Pretty soon I'll have to start doing some finish work on these projects  Also the weather has been mild enough to do some painting on the motor. 38 deg a heatwave. painted outside and put in the garage to dry.

Thanks guys. Been fitting the motor back together, all painted now. Have to start putting finishing touches on all the little projects, lights, motor, trim polishing, windshield trim, gas tank install and then figure out what kind of cusions to make up. Lots of loose ends to tie up and seems like the cold season is going too fast, sounds crazy for a boater. Would like to get it wrapped up by April so I can get the topside painted and then put all the goodies together.

Cal, an amazing rebuild. Love to see it someday. Excellent woodwork.

Where did you get your LED lights? The lights on my CC trailer need to be redone. (original lights - operating but barely)and I was thinking of doing LED lights in the original housings.
