thanks frog,ed bought this boat about 4 or 5 years ago and we are still trying to finish it,most of the work was done the last 3 years, but im pretty happy so far,its not perfect but with the shed im working in its a little tough .
this boat was sitting in a farmers field for years,it was all white and all the upholstery was shot, almost everything has been redone.but i see a light at the end of the tunnel, and maybe someday we will finaly be able to get it wet, lol, john

OMG John you painted a Merc Teal Blue!!!!! How Dare You stomp on such hallowed ground?????

Just kidding buddy...once you get past the need for trophies it all becomes down to creativity and coolness. And that is really high on the coolness scale in my humble opinion. Nice job.

Great custom look John, like the color scheme. That's what I think will eventually be done to a lot of these old boats. I think it will help to increase interest in fixing them up in the future.jim

If you can put headlights on a boat then you can paint a Merc any damn color you wish. She looks fantastic in my eyes. The boat And the motor!

thats why it takes me so long to get these old boats done.john.p.s. shipster i would love to see a post of your progress on your boat as you go along, john

and by the way, how are your resto's coming i haven't seen either of your posts in awhile

It's been brutally hot here too John, upper 90's which puts my garage in the low 100's by afternoon. I've gotten the stringers bedded and glassed in, and some of the plywood cut for the floor. Had to replace my 16' overhead garage door this morning, I backed my Starflite into it last fall. It had gotten so weak I was afraid it was going to fall in on the GT project boat!

(Should have posted that one in the "Bonehead Moves" thread, but......... )

i just came in for a break, its hot out there, lol,i got the motor together,we just need decals and a good face plate, anyone going to the hammondsport show that can lend us one?its a 50 hp ,im not sure of the year 63 or 64 i believe, the faceplate on this one is really bad.
well back to cutting ,grinding and drilling the stainless sheet,we cut this out of a bigger sheet with a hand grinder and cutoff wheel.

lol,i could do it,but dont have enough time.
i am going to "try" to engrave the stainless steel transom plate,we worked all day cutting them and drilling them ,i buffed it up like a mirror the other day and when we held it up on the boat we got blinded by the sun,so i made it a satin finish,so we dont blind anybody following us,lol.
im not sure when we will get there we do plan on leaving early in the morning though, about 5 or 6 hour drive, john

Per your uncertainty of the year on the motor.......
Your motor is a 1964 Merc 500 however your prop should be a thru-hub exhaust prop not the one you have on it now that would have been 1961 1962 and up would be the through-hub exhaust props.
The 63 and earlier Merc 500's had the triangular dyna-float covers on the bottom motor mounts and in 1964 (and up) they went to the more rectangular shape covers. The style of front cowl would be different as well it would have been the 25 anniversary style cover the one you have now is 61 through 63
She looks fantastic I can't wait to see it in the water. I wish I had a face plate and prop on hand I'd send it along.

I like it John.
It may not be the "correct" color, but it's got Mercury guts.
It looks great on the boat and it has your custom touch.
If it were mine the only thing I would change is the adress where it is stored. She is a beauty.

Wow, color matching that motor is like a crowning touch!
When you think about it, in the last 50 years, the motors hanging on the back of our boats were just that: hanging on the back! Never meant to blend, or be integrated to the boat.
[more often, we'd see trailers painted to match, but the motor- that was always, well, motor color]
I mean, many early motors like the Johnson Golden Javelins and Sunset Orange Mercs were beautiful, but the way John makes this motor an extension of the total package, well, it looks perfect!
Excellent work, once again. And nice visor, too!

not so much with OMC's but I have seen quite a few vintage boats over the years that have had Mercs on them painted to match the boat. It is a perfect touch for sure Jim Bart. I have seen Scott's also follow that example where the cowl is painted to follow suit with the boat. This boat that John has done is perfect. Have a blast at the show!!!!

boy jim, that is quite the compliment, its replies like yours that really made all the work worth it,and the 3 years to finish it(not working on it all the time).
but its far from perfect, lol.there are some things i would have done differently ,but thats a secret, lol, lol.
i think i made ed and my mom happy with it.and thats what its all about.
someday ill get to one of my boats,i figured i would practice on ed and moms, lol.
next is the boat im giving to my nephew then mikes(brother in law).
i will do mine next year.
so thank you jim and and jim,i still have work on it to do,and hopefully get the motor lettered tomorrow, and the visor finished,i was going to say that then i was done, but i just remembred to grease the hubs, lol.john
