Personally, I love inboards. I own 9 boats, mostly inboards, a few stern drives. All are V8s. Sure, the engines are heavy but you can get well over 300 HP with a small block Chevy. How heavy would a 300 HP outboard be? As for room, you don't really need much unless you're fishing and even then, the "dog house" is a seat.

I always opt for either a 327 or 350 Chevy, a 351 Windsor Ford or a big block 454. Performance parts for all of them are readily available and fairly cheap. A straight six is a long engine. Any boat that will accommodate a straight six will take the more compact V8.

Also, "junk" boats with V8s can be had for cheap. Maybe the engine has had it but you'll get the nearly indestructible Velvet Drive transmission and every single marine part to bolt onto another block. (Never buy an inboard boat without a Velvet Drive.)

Lastly, the sound. Of course, the absolute sweetest sound is a flathead engine but the non-muffled gurgle of a V8 at idle is music that an outboard just can't play. It makes me want to take my clothes off and drink beer. Pure magic!

Chuck, no need to be sorry, I have the bid on the 2nd one you posted but wasn't going to say anything till I had it for sure.
Now, with the cat outs the bag if I do win the bid (which I dought very much because I can't afford what they usually end up going for) I will be making a road trip very close to you and will drop your trailer if I get it. couple more days to go.

Don't get me wrong. I loved my Sabre, 327 AMC Javelin. Topped out around 51mph. It was just getting too much for me to handle alone, heavy at the dock and on the trailer. Ran like a fine Swiss watch.

Holy Crap Mark that's cool! How did you get the fuel injection curve figured out for the computer? I was seriously considering the '85 Chevy TPI top end on the 350 going into the Resorter but wasn't sure how the heck I was going to get a marine curve programmed into the ECU. I figured the TPI would have all the torque in the range I need it since it always died out around 4000 rpm on the cars.

That was 2006 and it was/is all Merc. Its a 600HP with ITS outdrive. Last I heard that boat was running around in the Niagra Falls area.
The blower is a little bit bigger than the stock one but not much and the polish job looked so much better than the Merc Blue that came on it.
Pretty much all the mfg's have EFI now its no big deal at all but that was before they had to start using cats. I got out of all that really stupid go fast crap after that one and have never looked back but it was fun.

Nothing like the sound of a big block a 3400 running with water cooled EX.

You're gone, taken by the dark side. Redemption is beyond reach. As long as you can't say no, talk to Greg, he's been trying to pare down his stable. :laugh:

Hey Cosmic,
If the wife starts asking if you have enough anchors for your boats ?
And you live near a tower ? and she has a sudden interest in rifles ?
And asks you to work on your boats in the north East corner of the property, away from the trees ? There may be a burial at sea in your future ?

Congrats on your new-old boat !!!

I almost did it again too ? Today was the day to buy one ? but it was gone..... lucky me !!!! ha-ha-ha

Chuck, don't have to worry about the wife at all but that's another story.

I am thinking its a Ranger. HIN is RIV 144 57B
Anyone know how to decipher it?
The info in the Librar only goes back to 58, figures I get a 57.

Now that you have enough of them ? It's time to start working on one ?
I should talk ????
4 wooden boats
1 cedar canvas canoe
1 fiberglass canoe
3 fiberglass boats
1 round bumper boat shell

Only 2 boats would float ???

I want to get started on the Custom Craft bad but I have to make a living also, you see I have this nasty 1937 Ford Club Cabriolet taking up all the my space inside and the weather just won't cooperate enough to let me work outside on it yet.
Also I need to make my Century go away asap. I moved that in front of the shop so when I get a good day I can get it ready to sell.
Anyone interested?

Thanks for the offer but I have nine boats, only the Formula 223SS is turn key. I sold my 1927 Paige-Detroit woody wagon project a few years ago and demolished my O gauge train room...all to make more room for boat restoration. Tough decisions sometimes...can't keep everything.

LOL, I understand and I am just trying to make room myself.

Now the #s
RIV 144 57B

RIV = Ranger 4
144 = number 144 built that year.
57B = 1957 Blue Anodized

Not much blue left on it so it will get polished for sure.
But not sure I am done with the Tin hulls yet as I really want a Rocket or a 49/50 single seat utility.

So the Feather Craft went to my brother in law so I don't have to worry about that one (sorta).
I haven't been around here much because of trying to get my car done and a few other problems happening in my life but I thought I would post this to prove I have a huge problem with these things.
I saw this and was just stopping to get a look at the trim pump to really see what the difference was between a IO pump and a OB one and then the Dam thing followed me home. WTF!
