Hi Bill, you may want to search online about the engines, they look pretty close together, there is usually a distance between and a toe in to get it to work correctly.

Are you keeping the pulley system, or switcing over to a push pull system? Makes a difference.

As I recall, Johnson suggested 20" between center of motors, which does make them close. If you are using the original aluminum clamps on the motors that the pulley system connected to, I have a NOS tie bar I am not using I can sell you for cheap. Was going to use it with my Gale 40's Rideguide system as it is pretty heavy duty, but am using a mercruiser one that is even more substantial!

Interstingly, the Gales came with the associated tie bar, and it was MAYBE 3/8". It was used with a pulley system and was obviously adequate, but not what i would be comfortable with.

For what it is worth, mine will be a mix of what is below.

Thanks for the replies, great pics.

Larry, did you build that boat? Would like to see where the wire harness goes through the splashwell. Thanks

Whatsleft, yes I am keeping the original cable system, and I believe you are right on the 20" as per my old Johnson brochure.

Cheers

Yes Bill, We built to boat. It was a really FUN restoration.

This is the only photo that I could find of the wiring going through the splash well. Both go through the starboard side. We trimmed the hole by buying a stainless steel cup holder and cutting it apart just below the flange. Well...... it was exactly the right size
The motors are set at 24 inches on center with a 1/2" tow in.

Re:Twins 9 years 7 months ago #106040

I have the same hole in the starboard side, but didn't think the wire harness would be long enough for the port engine. Did you use a standard harness or come up with something longer? Did you use springs on the cable steering?

Thanks

Bill

Bill, The Glastron is so wide that we had to lengthen the harness for the port side motor about 14 inches. It's not a huge job. The connections were made under the splash well.
We got lucking on the Herters. It so narrow that the standard harness is going to work. We test fit these last week.

Woodglass,
Counter rotating motors are great, BUT... are extremely rare in 1950's and early 1960's outboards for our Glassics. Dual, standard rotating motors work just fine, especially in lower HP motors. We will not hesitate to use a matched pair of standard rotating motors.

Due to the prop torque the steering will sometimes pull to Starboard and can be a bit hard to turn to Port. I've found this to be barely noticeable. On a light hull, underway, the starboard side may lift leaning your boat to Port, again, barely noticeable and seems to not exist when you are up on plane. In reverse, with both props turning the same direction, prop walk to port can also exist, sometime making docking more difficult. I use this as an advantage, by nosing the bow in towards the dock and putting it in reverse your stern will pull into the dock.

Gatore,
The only ONE STOP SHOP that I'm aware of for everything needed for your cable steering set-up is: boatdesigns.com They are part of the Glen-L boat builder store. I, however, have purchased dozens of NOS pulleys and tension springs on eBay over the years. The 3/16" cable can be purchased at you local Hardware Store.

All fine examples shown, here's another that may give you some ideas Bill. It's from a while back, but a classic design IMHO;

Thanks Handyandy, that's one of the manuals I was looking at. ( I actually scanned that one). That & the big service manual don't show the springs that prompted my question. Thompsonboat, thanks I believe that's the bar I'm looking for. Is yours still available whatsleft?
Thanks

Make sure you get what you need, and if you'll let me know what shipping is to the US zip 26554, I'd be interested in the balance of those parts.

I think twin vintage Mercs would look good on the back of this:

This is one of the best twin motor steering setups I have seen.
It uses all original Super RideGuide parts and works as smooth
and steady as any in my experience. Jim was fortunate enough to
have saved the complete setup from his days in racing and used it
on this nice Power Cat 15c with twin 150xs Mercs.

Much better than the twin setup on this G3, I mean that can't be a kicker :)

Re:Twins 9 years 6 months ago #107126

Larry, a couple questions if I may. On the purple Glastron, did you use springs on the cable steering, if so, where? Where did you fasten the ends of the cables? That is a nice neat install.
Thanks

Bill, We used springs on both the port and starboard sides of the hull.
The springs and pulleys aligned perfectly with the rub rail, so they were through bolted through the rub rail before installing the rubber rub rail insert.
We have, on several occasions had the glass in plywood blocks to secure both the springs and pulleys.

Larry, I have decided to follow your lead & attach the pulleys to the inside of the rub rail. Where did you get this piece from?

Thanks again

Bill, Those are Ronstan Series 30BB Double Exit Blocks. They are Sailboat hardware. They come as either single or double pulley set-ups. I bought these off eBay for about $25 each. landfallnavigation.com sell them. There may be other sources and manufacturers. Look up "exit blocks". We, of course, used them strictly as cable guides. There may be cheaper alternatives.

The first twins to be countering rotating was a Mercury Mark 58 use in a race by Richard McDerby (owner of Yellow Jacket Boats) in 1957 in the Long Beach-Catalina Marathon.

Mercury had build Mac the custom counter rotating Mark 58 just for that race.It was kept a secret till after the race was over.

Mac wanted to win as to beat Roy Rogers (part owner of Yellow Jacket Boats) who won the race in 1955. Now no one won the 1956 race because it was called off because of fog

Thanks Larry, appreciate your help. Just remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!!

Satx, I was only lucky enough to find three, not so good shape motors to make two good ones from! A lot of work went into those two.

Cheers
