Hey Bruce, in the quote above you said 85 lower unit. Where you talking about the 80hp i plan on buying or where you saying to get an 85hp lower unit for the 80hp?

I think i know what you meant but just want to make sure.

I did the swap, went from 58 fat fifty to 61 johnson 75hp power head and lower unit. still looks like 58 fat fifty externally unless being scrutinized by an expert who will point to the lower propeller shaft housing. it was late last season but allready I picked up just over 5mph on my 64 Sea Ray 500. I need to do a little fine carb tuning, but sofar am very happy.

Yes - I meant to say the 80. The V4 mechanical lower unit remained mainly unchanged from 1960 thru 1968. The later ones - after about 1964 or so have a better clutch arangement with a ball detents. The one on that 80 would have the improved detent clutch.
