Interesting treatment on the sides...wonder why they did that?

The guy in Vermont added those to get better "getting upon plane faster" when he was using the bigger motors. He said they helped…." maybe a little", but not worth it.

To ALL,

How I wish that I could find a similar hull here in south TX, as that LOOKS like PERFECTION in a bay flyfishing & Gulf-coast tarpon boat.

Just joined the site - really excited to see all of this background on the Maritime Marine boats. I purchased a 1964 "Nova Scotia" about 8 years ago and recently completed converting it to a center console. The boat is 50 years old and still going strong. Very cool to see the posts from the guys who cut and welded the boat!

Can anyone fill in details on the relationship between Maritime Marine and Mon Ark? They are obviously the same boats (I thought mine was a Mon Ark until I did some research and found this site...

I bought a 1968 Walk Thru Nova Scotia but when I got it home I found that the previous owner had fooled me. It had over 23 corrosion holes in the hull that had been covered with bondo and painted. The original foam had been saturated with water and gas for who knows how many years creating huge spots of corrosion. I took it to someone to weld and they estimated 1200.00 min. Since I only paid 500.00 for the hull that was not an option so I am in the process of restoring it now using Aluminum plate, sealed rivets with thickened GFlex epoxy. I will show you but dont know how to post pics.

Satx,

I am considering selling my boat (the polished one it the beginning of this thread). Are you still looking for one of these?

Cool to see another one of these finally after many many searches about their history I have a 1969 which is the only one built in 69 and the last one ever built there by an employee for his years of service I’m told recently just got done restoring it wanted to keep it as original as possible but was impossible to find material to match it’s certainly an eye turner paint is the last to be done “ someday “ the name on it is THE LAST ONE very cool

Cool thread so far!
I lived in the Bahamas on Nassau at the time these boats raced. My Dad worked for OMISA which was Outboard Marine International South America. We received all of the factory powered Johnson/Evinrude powered boats when they got there. Back then they were powered by the X-115 and the GT-115 engines. I had the privilege of running one from Nassau back to Grand Bahama each year for shipment. That was the days of ballast tanks instead of power trim!
Think I remember seeing Mona Lou!

Hi all. Not sure if anyone is still active in this thread. I recently purchased a 1966 Maritime Nova Scotia 17' and am working on making it nice again! It's been great seeing all the photos and original ads about this boat. I'm in Upstate NY and found the boat locally. It will live its next few years of life on Sodus Bay, right off Lake Ontario.

The hull seems to be in phenomenal shape for its age. No leaks and no major dents/dings. The original machine finish is still present although not as vibrant as it once was. She has a 1969 Evinrude 115hp on the back. It runs... and may run a lot better after putting a little money into it.

I've also considered repowering with a newer 70hp or 90hp for a few reasons... mainly reliability, fuel efficiency, and power trim/tilt! So far, I've redone some basic wiring for the horn, lights, etc. and added a bilge pump. Also cleaned years of dirt and grime via pressure washing and scrubbing. Future upgrades include replacing the floor plywood and carpet (they're pretty bad right now but seems like a simple-enough fix), repainting the bow area or laying down a SeaDek-type EVA foam material, and replacing the seats.

I'd love to keep hearing your stories and information about these Maritime "Indestructables." Advice is also welcome regarding the fix-up process. I've attached a few photos of this beauty below:

Thanks!

Nice looking boat. Looks to be in decent shape too. Is the plywood in the transom still good?

The hull is in great shape, considering. The only wood in the transom is the thick board that the top motor mounts bolt to. It is rotted completely on one side so if/when I repower with a different engine, I'll make sure to swap it out. The strength of the transom is all in the aluminum, however!!
